Brief introduction
The remote mountains of northwest Vietnam are home to some of South-East Asia’s most rugged terrain, beautiful scenery and colourful hill tribes. Leaving the graceful boulevards of Hanoi behind, travel to Mai Chau before traversing the bumpy mountain roads to Son La, Dien Bien Phu, Lai Chau, and Sapa. Experience breathtaking mountain views and meet friendly locals along the way. If you want to get off the beaten track in Vietnam, this is the trip for you.

Day 1: Hanoi – Thac Ba Lake
Day 2: Thac Ba Lake – Mu Cang Chai
Day 3: Mu Cang Chai – Sapa
Day 4: Sapa trekking
Day 5: Sapa trekking – overnight train to Hanoi


Detail itinerary
Day1: Hanoi – Thac Ba Lake (130 km driving, 3 hour driving, 2 hour boating, 1 hour walking, 4 km trekking)
Departing Hanoi we take a spectacular ride through fabulous countryside to Thac Ba Lake which is the largest artificial lake in Vietnam and famous for the first hydro power plant. Arriving at noon we embark on a scenic boat trip along the lake. After 2 hours boating we arrive at Dzao village where we spend our night at the local house or resort on your request. In the afternoon we can stroll out around the nearby village to study their local daily life or free to swim on the lake.
Day2: Thac Ba Lake – Mu Cang Chai (180 km driving, 4 hour driving, 2 hour trekking, 7km trekking)
After our breakfast we are driven back by boat to the lake bank where we meet your driver and transfer to Mu Cang Chai which is about 180 km from Thac Ba Lake. This ride is superb with fantastic scenery passing us by as we wind our way through mountain valley, green tea terraces. We discover the villages of many different ethnic minority groups of the region. Arriving at Mu Cang Chai in the afternoon we walk about 2 hours to visit Muong Khoa and Muong Kim villages to see the colorful minority groups. You stay overnight in Mu Cang Chai town.
Day3: Mu Cang Chai – Na Kim – Hua Khat villages – Sapa (110 km driving, 3 hour driving, 7 km trekking, 2 hour trekking)
After our breakfast we walk about 5km through Na Kim and Hua Khat villages which are the home to Thai and Black Dzao people and visit bee grown farm and experience the daily life of the locals. And then we climb to the main road to get the car passing Cao Phu Pass with a great view before being transferred to Sapa in the late afternoon. You stay overnight in Sapa.
Day4: Sapa – Y Linh Ho – Lao Chai – Ta Van (12km trekking, 4-5 hour trekking)
After having breakfast, we have a short walk of 5km along mountain trail to visit Y Linh Ho village which is inhabited by black Hmong tribe and completely secluded from tourists, especially you are able to embrace raw Sapa culture and community by coming into some native houses to discover their own culture and custom as well as study how the local tribe make handicraft from natural materials such as: hemp, indigo…ect. Continuing to walk down Muong Hoa River where you can take a rest or swim before trekking uphill to Lao Chai village where your picnic lunch will be served. After lunch, you will visit the Day and Red Dzao tribes of Tavan village, which lies in the middle of Muong Hoa valley where excellent panoramas of rice terraced fields. You stay overnight at the local home stay.
Day 5: Ta Van – Giang Ta Chai – Hau Thao – Sapa – Overnight train to Hanoi (8km trekking, 3 hour trekking)
You have breakfast at the home stay before trekking about 8km towards the Red Dzao village of Giang Ta Chai. On the way you will trek up and downhill then through bamboo forest before arriving at the waterfall, Rattan bridge and Stream where you have short rest to swim and picnic lunch. Continuing to walk uphill about 2km to Hau Thao village where we catch the car to return to Sapa. You are free to discover Sapa town and Market before having shower and dinner then being transferred to Lao Cai train station to catch the night train to Hanoi.
